FAQS

Before your wax removal appointment please read the information on this page to help you prepare for your appointment.

  • How do I know if the ear wax needs removing?
Generally ear wax is a good thing, it helps your ear to self clean and protects it from infections. Sometimes however your body produces too much wax which can block your ear. The symptoms of impacted wax are: difficulties hearing, fullness in the ear, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), dizziness, ear ache, feeling of blocked ear.
  • How do I prepare for the wax removal?
To make the procedure easier and more comfortable, it is good to soften the wax prior to the removal. Please use a medical grade olive oil from the pharmacy for 3-5 days prior to you appointment. You must not use olive oil, if you have perforated ear drum, recent ear operations or open mastoid cavity. If in any doubts please contact us, or your local GP. Please never use kitchen cooking oil or use cotton buds for the ear cleaning.
  • Is wax removal painful, is it safe ?
Ear wax removal is generally pain free and if performed by trained professional it is safe. Of course with all procedures there are some risks, which include scratching of the ear canal, dizziness, tinnitus, change in the hearing thresholds or infection. The ear wax professional will have a chat with you prior to your appointment and will answer any questions you may have regarding the risks. At any point if you will experience discomfort during the procedure, please ask us to stop.
  • What to expect at your appointment?
The appointment should take around 30-40 minutes. At the beginning we will ask you few health related questions, look into your ears and explain the procedure. We will answer any questions you may have. Once you are happy to go ahead you will need to sign a consent form. We may switch between the methods half way through, for example if wax is too hard to comfortably remove with microsuction, we may switch to irrigation.
  • How much does the wax removal cost?
The price for the home visit if £70 if the wax was removed. If wax was not present the client pays only £20 examination fee.
